Opposite Genes Attract

May 27th, 2009

A recent study found that partners with different genes were more likely to be attracted to one another than those that had similar genes.  Even more interesting, people are attracted to people who have a different immune system from themselves.  The study goes on to suggest that this is part of evolution because differing immune systems give offspring a higher chance of fighting off more illnesses.

Watch this video, for more details on this study:

The Future of the Romance Gene

What if this research takes off and people everywhere start taking their partners to labs to have their DNA tested to see if it’s different enough to continue the relationship?  While the relationship may be doing well and the couple feels that they are great for each other, the test may end up doing more harm than good if it comes out negative for compatibility.

What this personal DNA test may cause in a relationship is a self-fulfilling prophecy.  A couple may go in thinking all is great and come out feeling as if their relationship is doomed.  All of a sudden, things aren’t going as well as they were before the test.  The couple doesn’t get along and each of them start to wonder if there is someone out there that is better for him or her.  The negativity of the test has taken over the positivity it once had.

On the flipside, this personal DNA test may make it easier for people who use online dating (which is dramatically increasing).  If people were to receive this test and receive a certain code for their romance gene, they could then compare codes with others who also had the test.  If two people have codes that indicate compatibility, they will be more inclined to get to know each other better and start a relationship.

The Environment and Your Relationship

It may be fun to find out if you and your partner or potential date have compatible genes, it’s important to realize that environment plays a role.  How you were raised and your life overall has an influence on how you think, feel and what you enjoy.  While the gene may have some influence, it does not dictate all of your romance interests.  For now, one of the best things you can do is trust your feelings and let love happen.

(2) RESPONSES to Opposite Genes Attract

What would be super cool is if they could do some tabletop genetic testing for speed dating sessions. That would really help to narrow down the crowd, and weed out the liars. :)
